Volume Nine Gears up for Mobile Marketing in 2013
Today Volume Nine welcomed Cindy Krum, CEO of Mobile Moxie, to help us all gear up for mobile marketing strategies in 2013. Among other things, we dove into a lot of site optimization techniques & options, to help our clients really shine in mobile search results.
Volume Nine is committed to working with clients to stay on top of mobile trends & mobile optimization is only going to grow in importance as more consumers conduct searches on their smart phones. We certainly appreciated Cindy helping us brush up on mobile trends for 2013 and we can’t wait to start taking some of our learnings to work for clients!
Cindy gave us some great information, but from a high level, here are a few of the key takeaways she gave us.
Mobile SEO Best Practices
When optimizing for mobile, typically your same core SEO strategy works for mobile indexing. The real trick with mobile optimization is ensuring that search engines understand that the page ranking is mobile friendly, or has a mobile friendly version. Search Engines can even detect the dimensions of your phone, and will rank websites accordingly, so if you have a lot of mobile traffic from one specific device, it may make sense to optimize for that browser size first.
Mobile Design Best Practices
For mobile design, you’ve got three core options:
(1) A separate, mobile website (for example an m.website.com)
(2) Making your website responsive (so the same page adjusts for mobile browsers)
(3) Use a hybrid solution with RESS (Responsive Design plus Server Side solutions)
There isn’t a one-size fits all solution to which of these will make the most sense for your company, as there are pros & cons for each. Responsive design is the “easiest” for search engines to crawl & rank, however sometimes you need a more streamlined mobile user experience.
Cindy also gave a lot of great examples of companies who are “doing it wrong” when it comes to mobile, and important techniques to look at when evaluating a website for mobile best practices.
Today’s presentation just further cements the importance of an SEO strategy that really incorporates every way you audience is searching for you. Whether they are on a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer, you want to be found everyone your audience is looking!
